A PLACE BENEATH THE SURFACE

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

SYNOPSIS
During the war between 1969 and 1975 millions of landmines were laid under Cambodian soil. Many of these relicts remain under the ground until today. As a symbol of the past they illustrate the complex social structures which underlie the relationship of men and mine and their related notion of agency.
Within their work A PLACE BENEATH THE SURFACE Julia Wichmann and Leef Hansen initialize dialogues about the past and its social acquaintance in the present. Six characters reflect their relation to landmines. In that way a personal and differentiated topography of the country is formed, in which the borders of inner and outer landscape as well as the nature of memories and emotions merge peculiarly together. The directors created a calm and impactful audio-visual concept to address the special relationship of men, place, time and object.
